Ladders Are Tools by Beau Briggs

  Ladders are tools.  Many of the basic safety rules that apply to most tools also apply to the safe use of a ladder: *  If you feel tired or dizzy, or are prone to losing your balance, stay off the ladder. *  Do not use ladders in high winds or storms. *  Wear clean slip-resistant shoes.  Shoes with leather soles are not appropriate for ladder  use since they are not considered sufficiently slip resistant. *  Before using a ladder, inspect it to confirm it is in good working condition.  *  Ladders with loose or missing parts must be rejected. Rickety ladders that sway or lean to the side must be rejected. *  The ladder you select must be the right size for the job. *  The Duty Rating of the ladder must be greater than the total weight of the climber, tools, supplies, and other objects placed upon the ladder. *  The length of the ... OSHA Update by Jerry Pigsley

On December 22, OSHA announced that a construction contractor in Missouri was issued 13 serious safety violations following an accident in which a 16 year old laborer was killed during the disassembly of a crane.  The worker was struck and killed by the swinging cab and boom of a crane which was being disassembled at a jobsite.  The OSHA investigation found that the crane operator was unaware that the worker had been directed to stand in an inadequately marked danger zone.  In addition, the worker had not been provided adequate protective head gear.  The OSHA investigation discovered deficiencies including inadequate training, failure to document inspections and failure to protect workers from falls and from making contact with operating machinery parts.  OSHA proposed fines of approximately $45,000 for those violations and the Wage and Hour Division assessed an additional $11,000 in proposed fines for the construction contract ...
