  If you think the OSHA regulations only require affected employees to wear hardhats on large- scale construction sites, think again. The standards require affected employees to wear an approved hardhat ANYWHERE they are exposed to falling objects, as well as when a worker is exposed to contact with an electrical current. Here is an overview of some of the different types of jobs and hazards that could require the use of hardhats:  Working in areas where materials are handled or transported overhead that may fall, such as: working beneath a co-worker who is handling tools or materials on a ladder;  working beneath or near a scaffold or overhead platform where materials or  tools are being used; working in areas where others are performing tasks on a roof, elevated floor, or other overhead area; working beneath conveyors; working near ... Alan Kriegler - 2014 Instructor of the Year

 
A new Excellence In Construction Award for the Cornhusker ABC Chapter is the Craft Instructor of the Year Award.  It will be presented to an instructor who possesses outstanding creativity, a positive attitude, and the ability to transfer knowledge through good communications skills and innovative teaching to promote lifelong learning to our future workforce. The recipient of this award best embodies the merit shop ideals through superior effort and talent.  We would like to congratulation Lincoln Electrical Instructor, Alan Kriegler, Sentry Electric who will receive this award at our Excellence In Construction Awards Ceremony on February 19 at The Cornhusker Hotel, Lincoln, NE.  Congratulations Alan!

David Chapin - 2014 Leadership Award

Update-Bills of Interest in the NE Legislature...

    Of particular interest was the hearing on LB 255 (Morfeld) which would provide state income tax credits for only construction apprenticeships. Beginning  in 2016, a tax credit of up to two thousand dollars or fifty percent of the total wages paid to such apprentice during the taxable year, whichever is less, shall be applied as a nonrefundable credit the for wages paid by the taxpayer to apprentices against the employer’s income tax imposed by the State of Nebraska.  It is limited to apprenticeships accredited by the US Bureau of Apprenticeship, plus it requires that the apprenticeship program be jointly administered by labor and management trustees.  It was referred to Revenue Committee.   At the State Chamber’s bill review, the Taxation Council along with the Labor Relations Council agreed with the concept but not the requirement to be “jointly adminis ... U.S. DOL Rules Update by Bill Harding

  On November 21, the U.S. DOL issued its Fall 2014 semi-annual regulatory agenda.  Many construction industry contractors may not be regular readers of this document, but the November 21 issue is an exception.  In that issue, U.S. DOL announced that the new notice of proposed rulemaking for the white collar exemptions to overtime pay requirements under the FLSA which had been expected in November, 2014 will now be issued in February, 2015.  In March, 2014, President Obama ordered U.S. DOL to revamp the regulations for the white collar exemptions in order to make more workers eligible for overtime.  Obama noted then that the salary requirement threshold is only $23,660.00/year.  As a consequence, most commentators are expecting the salary threshold to be increased substantially and perhaps even doubled.  On another note, the November 21 document also announced that the pe ...
