OSHA Drug Testing - Workplace Substance Abuse by Beau Briggs

  The vast majority of drug users are employed, and when they arrive for work, they don't leave their problems at the door. Of the 17.2 million illicit drug users aged 18 or older in 2005, 12.9 million (74.8 percent) were employed either full or part time. Furthermore, research indicates that between 10 and 20 percent of the nation's workers who die on the job test positive for alcohol or other drugs. In fact, industries with the highest rates of drug use are the same as those at a high risk for occupational injuries, such as construction, mining, manufacturing and wholesale.   OSHA recognizes that impairment by drug or alcohol use can constitute an avoidable workplace hazard and that drug-free workplace programs can help improve worker safety and health and add value to American businesses. Title VII UPDATE by Bill Harding

  On December 30, 2014, a federal district court issued a ruling which should serve as a reminder to all construction industry employers on one area of Title VII litigation which is very difficult to defend.  The case involved a painting contractor on a project to clean and paint three bridges.  The project was for the State Department of Transportation and the subcontractor was hired by the general contractor on the project.  The employee in question was the project site manager for the painting subcontractor.  On one day, the site manager received complaints from two of the painting contractor employees about racially discriminatory comments issued by a vice president of the general contractor.  The site manager relayed the complaints to his supervisor and to a representative of the State Department of Transportation.  The next day, the gener ... ABC Apprentice Graduation - Right Around The Corner


Apprenticeship graduation is just around the corner.  Lincoln area students who complete the Lincoln Education curriculum will graduate April 14.  The graduation ceremony will be at The Knolls Restaurant with social time beginning at 6:00 and dinner scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
Omaha area students who complete the Omaha Education curriculum will graduate on April 21.  The graduation ceremony will be at Anthony’s Restaurant with social hour beginning at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30.

Excellence In Construction Winners

    The 2015 Excellence In Construction awards celebration revealed the best of the best construction projects for 2014.  We’d like to congratulate Lund-Ross Constructors for the Project of the Year Award for The Barn at Glacier Park, Bennington, which was entered in the Historic Restoration/Renovation Less than $25 Million Category.  General Excavating won the Safety Award this year with their project The Nebraska Innovation Campus – Centralized Renewable Energy Systems, Lincoln, entered in the Public Works / Environmental Category.   The following companies received the EAGLE Award for their projects:   Renovation: Less than $4 Million Company Name:   Lueder Construction Co.
