NOVEMBER 13, 2008 (11/13/2008)

JERRY GORSKI ELECTED TO LEAD ABC IN 2009, JAMES ELMER ELECTED CHAIRMAN ELECT: At its November 11 meeting in Long Beach, CA, the ABC Board of Directors elected Jerry Gorski of Gorski Engineering, Inc., Collegeville, PA to serve as chairman of the association in 2009.

ABC SIGNS STATEMENT OF SUPORT WITH NATIONAL GUARD AND RESERVE: In celebration of Veteran’s Day, ABC November 11 signed a Statement of Support with Employer support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a U. S. Department of Defense agency that promotes employer support of employees’ military service.

In providing a bridge between employers and their employees that serve in the Reserves, ESGR’s mission is to “gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law and resolving conflicts through mediation.”  “ABC recognizes that the National Guard and Reserve are essential to the strength of our nation and the well-being of our communities,” said Bill Fairchild, 2008 ABC national chairman and president of R.W. Murray Co., Manassas, Va. “As ABC members employ a large number of veterans and current service members, a partnership with this organization signals the industry’s commitment to those who respond to their country in times of need.”

ESGR also works to inform service members and their employers about their rights and responsibilities under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA). Under USERRA, employers must allow employees to participate in military service and must promptly reinstate employees into a job following military service.

During the signing ceremony at ABC’s Board of Directors meeting in Long Beach, Calif., Fairchild encouraged ABC chapters and members to show their commitment to their employees by signing Statements of Support with ESGR.

NONRESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION JOB MARKET CONTINUES DOWNFALL IN OCTOBER: The nation’s nonresidential building construction job market declined for the second month in a row with a decrease of 4,100 jobs in October, according to the Nov. 7 employment report released by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Employment in nonresidential construction now stands at 769,200, having lost 38,200 jobs, or 4.7 percent since October 2007. The residential building construction job market continues to post higher declines with 8,100 jobs lost, or 12.4 percent, since October 2007. Residential employment now stands at 813,700.

“Any observer who was unconvinced that the U.S. economy has entered a period of recession will undoubtedly be persuaded by the October job numbers, which fell well short of already lowered expectations,” said Anirban Basu, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Chief Economist.  “The national economy is now feeling the full force of the financial crisis that peaked in September, and is now causing collateral damage in every region of the nation and in virtually every industry.  “Until a new regulatory environment is established, and until confidence is restored in the overall economy, financiers will stay on the sidelines further dampening economic performance,” said Basu. “The balance of 2008 will represent a period weaker than any experienced in decades, and 2009 does not look any better.”
