THE HAZARDS OF CRYSTALLINE SILICA: On May 20, 2011, OSHA issued a directive to implement the National Emphasis Program regarding Crystalline Silica. If you are doing work that creates this hazard or your workers are exposed to it, you will run the risk of a citation if you do not have the proper policy in place and training for your workers to recognize these hazards and reduce or eliminate them.
Silicon dioxide (SAND!) is a major ingredient in concrete, grout, mortar, and asphalt. Construction activities such as, mixing, cutting, grinding, sandblasting, or demolition of these materials creates fine particles that are suspended in the air (DUST!). This dust causes the disabling and irreversible lung disease silicosis, is a known carcinogen, increases the risk of Tuberculosis, and Bronchitis.
To reduce or eliminate this hazard:
ü Avoid using compressed air for cleaning surfaces
ü Use wet methods for cutting, chipping, drilling, sawing, and grinding
ü Respirator
ü Do not eat, drink or smoke near crystalline silica dust
ü Wash hands and face before eating, drinking or smoking away from the exposure area
“I’m an electrician, how does this affect me?” Regardless of trade, on a construction site, exposure to a hazard can (and has been) cited for not having the proper training. Make sure your written company safety policy is on site and has addresses these exposures. An OSHA compliance officer can interview any employee on a jobsite, so it would be wise to make sure you are addressing the hazards. Employee awareness and training will be of great importance.
